Xiamen City Interactive Model
The interactive model shows a strategic Energy Masterplan for the City of Xiamen. It represents different planning stages of energy efficiency and energy generating projects.
The interactive model is built out of a new material a kind of nylon, called SDL. The tiles are produced with 3D printers that use a laser beam to build layer by layer a 3D form out of the nylon powder. LED lights are installed underneath the SDL tiles. The lights are controlled by four consoles with buttons. A special software is used to control the communication between the buttons and the lights. The four consoles represent four themes – energy efficiency installations, renewable energy production, energy networks and pilot projects in Xiamen.
The tiles form a skin through which the lights compose a moving map of energy efficiency and energy generating projects. The urban skin becomes a canvas or drawing paper on which the lights create patterns like in calligraphy. The model has a demonstration phase in which all projects are explained in sequence and an interactive phase in which single projects are highlighted by using the buttons.
The four consoles create the possibility for four people to develop scenarios of cooperation between different projects in Xiamen or act out the effects of specific policies implemented by the government. Projects can be realized simultaneously or sequently supported by new financial programmes like the national stimulus funds or the CDM funds organized within the Kyoto protocol.
The model is both a simulation of a strategic energy plan and a tool to negotiate projects in this plan with local authorities, developers, engineers, planners, communities and other people or organizations. It is an idea and planning machine.
Four screens placed opposite of each console show brief animations that accompany a button and its project. The animation appears when a button is pushed. When no buttons are pushed a short introduction will play after which the model plays a short piece that shows Xiamen as a dynamic energy efficient city.
This is the first city model in the world completely made from SDL and the first complete interactive city model representing for a strategic energy efficiency development plan.
